Padstow Harbour

Boats in Padstow Harbour
A very popular destination for tourists, Padstow harbour is a welcome sight after a typically lengthy passage to get there.

When we approached on the delivery trip for our boat, all was calm and we passed safely over the doom bar and down the well-marked channel to anchor nearby at Stepper Point to wait until the inner harbour opened up, around 2 hours before high water. We briefly tied up in the tidal outer harbour before casting off and entering the inner harbour where the 'lock' doubles as a bridge to continue the quayside walk around the harbour.

Padstow harbour is delightful, but on a busy day nerves may become fraught as you try and understand which boat you are meant to tie alongside. Once safely moored up the town is wonderful to explore and its possible to have a drink and a fabulous meal overlooking ones boat, a little bit of Cornish magic.

The navigation guide by Trevor Platt (see below) offers invaluable guidance on what to watch out for on your way in. It’s also reassuring to know that the word Doom is actually a derivation or Dun or Dunne meaning sand.

The harbour master at Padstow is very welcoming and helpful and we are still receiving Christmas cards from the harbour office after just one visit to Padstow 4 years ago. We long to get back there.
